How creativity turned out to be one of the most sought-after skills from companies

Computers, technology, AI and robotics are slowly becoming a part of our life. Without any doubt – they are here to stay. They are taking over many of the daily tasks we were once supposed to do – from the organization of documents, through data analysis to construction of complex machinery.

Along with such a technical advance comes the inevitable questioning of the working environment we are currently in. Are we all going to lose our jobs? Are they going to govern us? Skynet?! On first glance questions like these are pretty normal and if we turn back the clock – have been asked in the times of booming technological advancement (e.g. The Industrial Revolution). More gasoline in the fire – according to some analysts, AI would probably replace some 40% of the current jobs. But …

It’s not all black & white

While outsourcing more manual, mundane tasks to machines and AI, we free more workforce time for the tasks that require more human imagination and understanding. A current study by LinkedIn, analysing hundreds of thousands of jobs postings, showed that the number 1 soft skill companies wanted in 2019 is creativity. Different studies showed that businesses that invest in employees’ creativity are more likely to increase productivity, to give better experience to the customer, to foster innovation and to have an overall financially successful business.

So creativity is good and can differentiate us from the machines. But how? Although tech is monopolizing the optimization of customer satisfaction, human players are the one that can create a successful emotional connection with the consumer. That is why companies and products that rely on more personal connection with the client, have the biggest chance of success.

But how to boost creativity?

First of all – we all need to break our boxed work environment. We need to give the employees more ways of expression. Talent and creativity lie in each and every person, we just need the catalyst to surface it. Mixed meetings is another helpful method – by combining employees from different fields and letting them discuss freely we can unleash a potential for different unorthodox approaches and ideas, once disregarded.
